Palo Alto, CA – On February 25 2015, CANDY HOUSE Inc. launched a Kickstarter campaign for Sesame, a new smart lock that is easy to install and effectively replaces keys which can be lost or forgotten.
“Back in Taiwan, everyone paid cash for everything. After moving here, I learned to use credit cards so that I don’t look like a tourist everywhere I go,” admits founder, Jerming Gu, “But credit cards are also disappearing – replaced by mobile payment apps. My Starbucks app pays for my green tea Frappuccino, I Venmo money to a friend for getting late-night pizza, I hop on an Uber without worrying about cab fare or tip.”
If our smartphones are increasingly becoming the keys to controlling our world, why can’t they make opening the door as easy as saying, “Open Sesame”? This new device by CANDY HOUSE does just that and more. Sesame fits on almost any lock easily, without the need to remove any parts or use tools, and is controlled by a free smartphone app. You can open the door with the app and even come up with a custom knock for your phone or door to unlock the device.
Sesame lets you give other people access too, and logs who is coming in and out of your house – giving you peace of mind when you are away. The battery life is approximately 500 days and a notification is sent the user when it is getting low. The CANDY HOUSE team believes that Sesame is better than existing smart locks that are too big, complicated to set up, slow to work and sometimes jam. Now they have brought their solution to Kickstarter.
“I might not need my wallet anymore but… I still feel there are too many things in my pockets. One thing I don’t need is the key, which people have been carrying for the past thousands of years. Something needs to change,” says Gu, “There are some solutions out there and I think they are not quite right. They make you replace the existing lock, and ruin the romance of engineering. We need something magical – super smart and way easy to use. This is how Sesame was born.”
In exchange for pledging to the project, backers can gain access to a variety of limited rewards with savings off the retail price. These rewards include Sesame with Bluetooth capability (in white, silver, black, or pink), Sesame with a Wi-Fi Access Point, a wooden cover Sesame, and customized Sesames (in your choice of color, texture, or pattern).
